The Tigers got down early 0-5 to the 2nd year program from Kuyper College but pushed through to a 25-16 win in the first set. Coach Spooner noted several major changes after last weeks loss to Indiana Northwest. “We moved Nicole Galbiscek to Left-side hitter and Tabitha Ryan to Libero. We need Tabitha’s excellent passing and defense and Nicole, just a freshman, has really responded well to the challenges of attacking and blocking.”
For Kuyper College, this was their first match and Coach Wiggers was very pleased with what he saw. “With only having five practices before tonight’s match I was very excited about what I saw from these girls.” The scrappy cross town rival got down early 16-3 in the second set but fought back before losing 25-17. In the third set the more experienced Tigers using excellent court awarness and placement of attacks won more easily 25-12.
For Coach Spooner though, this is a sign of great things to come with Kuyper College now fielding a volleyball team. “Next year Kuyper will be a full member of our region and the year after, host the Regional Tournament. That is most exciting for us and everyone in this town looking for great small college volleyball.”
The Tigers got good balanced scoring from Naomi Kemper (Hudsonville High), Joey Spooner (Rogers High) both with 7 kills, with Naomi’s serve receiving at 95%. Laura Melton had 5 kills and 18 assists. Tabitha Ryan-Libero had 5 digs, and 95% serve receive as well. Stefanie Miller served 18 times with 4 aces. Joey Spooner also with 4 aces is the NCCAA National leader in Blocks per game at 1.89.
The Tigers will travel to Marygrove College Invitational for a tough line-up that includes NSCAA powerhouses Rochester College and Ohio State University- Marion, this coming Saturday.
