The Lady Tigers found out the hard way what it means to play one of the hottest teams in the Mid-West region. Northland Baptist seeded fourth defeated Grace in the first round. Then they took the number one team in the nation Lincoln Christian University to four games in the semi finals and defeated the number two seed Moody Bible for third place over the weekend. “Give all the credit to Northland.” Coach Spooner said. “They were peaking at just the right time of year for them. They have great senior leadership and experienced players who played all weekend with great heart and determination. Coach Dave Herron is one of the best coaches in the nation and his team was well prepared” The Tigers found themselves ahead in the second set against Northland, 18-15 but couldn’t find the energy or the right combinations to finish strong. With several players sick from battling the flu all week, Coach Spooner was proud of their effort yet disappointed for the team. “I felt bad for the team, at this time of year its always about attrition. Staying healthy and injury free is the most critical element going into tournament weekend. We gave it all we had, yet I know the team was disappointed not being at full strength.”
Naomi Kemper was selected to the Regional All-Tournament team with a team high 8 kills and 16 digs. “Naomi’s defense is her strength and she had great digs and played with heart in the back row. She continually works hard on her hitting and that will only improve in the years to come.” Coach Spooner noted after the awards ceremony.
Sophomore Joee Spooner was selected the 2009 All-Regional Team as one of the 12 best players in the region this year. “Very well deserved for Joleana. She leads the nation in blocks, is fourth in our region with attack % of 31, and is one of our tri-captains this year. She showed great courage and fortitude playing this week suffering from the flu but was determined to do her best.” Coach Spooner noted about the Tigers middle hitter.
Lincoln Christian University went on to defeat Maranatha Baptist in the finals 3-1.
