“I always tell players individual awards are truly team awards. Without the team no one would get anything.” Coach Spooner said, “However, it is an honor and testament to the team that Joee and Naomi received national awards”
Naomi Kemper was selected to the ACCA All-American honorable mention team. Naomi led the team in defense averaging almost 4 digs per set. She ended the season with 455. She was second on the team with a 91% serve receive average with 453 attempts. She was the team leader in kills per set at 2.4 and 300 for the year. Second in serving aces with 48. “Naomi is known for her defense, she loves getting a dig up against a tough attack but this year she had to learn left side hitting. She is a hard worker and team leader on the court.” said Coach Spooner noting her high school training’s influence. “Playing at Hudsonville High School for Coach Christie Classen gave Naomi great fundamentals to build on. Her offense improved during the year ending with her best hitting % in the national tournament.”
Joleana Spooner was selected to the ACCA First Team All-American team. “I had the privilege of coaching my oldest daughter Amber in basketball here at Grace and now coaching Joee has been a great blessing. She improved dramatically toward the end of the year in her confidence attacking the ball and is well deserving of this award.” Her father and coach shared. Joee was the team leader in aces with 51. Lead the team in hitting 31%, second in kills with 274. She was the national leader both in the NCCAA Div. II and ACCA averaging 1.41 blocks per set. She had 104 block solo’s and 71 assists for a total 175 blocks. This broke the single season school record of 146 set in 1994 by GBC Hall of Fame member Trish Whittiker. Joee was also second in serving 91.6%, serving 392 times. Tabitha Ryan was first with 91.9%, serving 405 times. Joee was also selected the 2009 ACCA National All-Tournament team.
