10/22/2011- Wyoming, MI: The Tigers last 3 home matches all feature winning NAIA teams and Saturday played on of the best in the nation-Cornerstone University. The first match though was against Mt. Mary College and the Tigers played outstanding in the 3rd and 4th sets taking Mt. Mary to four sets before losing 25-17.
“We had some of our best and most consistent play in those two sets. We were aggressive serving and very disciplined in our offensive execution hitting over 30% in those sets.” Coach Spooner said after the match. “It was huge for our confidence and team mentality winning that third set, especially since we’ve made so many changes through out the season. I was especially encouraged by the contribution of our freshman to this effort. Mt. Mary is well coached but they too have struggled with injuries and adversity. Remaining focused on execution and minimizing our mistakes is our number one team goal.”
Joee Spooner and Naomi Kemper led the team with 12 kills each. Jessica Ryan had 25 assists with sister Tabitha getting 7 digs.
That proved to be a different matter against a Cornerstone team having one of their most successful in school history- coming in with a 23-3 match record and #1 in the WHAC Conference. The Golden Eagles dominated in 3 straight sets but the Tigers showed some resilience especially at the net. “One of our goals was to be aware of their great setter and not let her dominant us like before. Aubree Domsic and Naomi Kemper did a great job of blocking and not giving her the easy attacks she had previously. It was most encouraging to see what we worked hard on in practice payed off.” Coach Spooner said. “We just have to learn how to stay focused on what we control best on our side of the net.”
Tuesday night, Oct. 25th will be the Tigers last home match of the season. The Tigers are collecting used clothes for the Regional Christian Service Project. If you bring a bag of used clothes, admission is free. Thank you for great support through out the year.
