Saturday afternoon the Lady Tigers faced a tough and well prepared Roosevelt University. Grace came out strong in the first half against the Lakers and matched the intensity. Tactically and athletically the sides were even throughout the half with neither side being able to establish dominance. Roosevelt held the edge in total shots while the Tigers had the more quality scoring chances. The chess match played to a even 0-0 at the halftime whistle.
The Tigers came out of the break with different personnel in their lineup due to Jamie Hanna having to leave the match at half time. Still for the first 5-10 minutes of the second half the Tigers were able to match the Lakers. Then the Lady Lakers established control of the game for the next 15 minutes scoring on 3 straight shots and putting the Tigers in a hole that would prove too deep to climb out of. The young Tigers were able to gather their composure and finish the game playing hard and creating some opportunities to mount a comeback, but were unable to find the back of the net. The Lakers outshot the tigers for the game 26-9.
“We didn’t play poorly, actually for most the game we played very well.” Said Coach Rumenapp, “We lost our composure for about 15 minutes in the second half and it cost us. It’s a learning experience for out ladies. They are improving every game. During our first game we were able to stay focused [as a team] for about 55-60 minutes, today we were focused and dialed in for 75. There has been improvement in each game and significant improvement from the start of the season. Have to hand it to Roosevelt. In a game that neither team really had a clear advantage athletically and playing similarly stylistically they were able to get the job done.”
The Tigers are back to regional play this coming Saturday at 12:00 pm against Lincoln Christian University, the game will be hosted on campus at Velting Field.
