Lincoln, IL – The Tigers got their first win of the season over Lincoln Christian University today by a 3-2 score. Grace made the trip to Lincoln Ill seeking their first win of the season. The game did not start as the Tigers would have liked. The weather brought strong gusts of wind that made an impact against the Tigers. In the first minute of the game Lincoln slammed a ball forward which their player got onto and scored. The Tigers responded maintaining possession and creating chances. When it looked like the Tigers were in control, Lincoln again lofted a ball into the winds and again finished. Grace had several chances but could not find the net until under five minutes before half. Tigers Leonardo Caldas (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) got into the game and made an immediate impact. Leo was able to collect the ball and distribute to freshman Nate Colby who then played a precise pass to Josh Armstrong who blasted one into the net. The Tigers went into the half down 2-1. Grace came out in the second half looking for the victory. The Tigers controlled the ball for almost the entire second half with chance after chance posting 25 shots to Lincoln’s 4, and Grace having 15 corners to Lincoln’s 2 in the contest. The Tigers would level with a fantastic goal from Colt Nieuwenhuis (Martin, Mi) who sent a screamer that bent into the upper ninety of the goal. “With the amount of chances we were creating close to goal hitting the post, having it cleared off the line it was a pleasant surprise to have a long distance shot place almost perfect into the net”, said Assistant Coach Josh Rumenapp. The Tigers would continue to pressure the Lincoln goal with Alex Stoddard nearly scoring, coming close a number of times as well as Nate Colby with quality chances. It would take extra time for the game to be settled. There was more of the same in the first extra time, and in the second the Tigers were finally able to get the much deserved goal and win in thrilling fashion when Asumani Iyakareyme (Grand Rapids, Mi) broke through and placed a perfect pass to Chris Thompson (Hudsonville, Mi) who netted the winner in the golden goal scenario earning the Tigers their first win of the season. Grace will next travel to Lansing to face Great Lakes Christian College on Tuesday the 11th.
