The 2013-14 Lady Tiger squad took on a talented alumni team in a spirited game on Saturday at the Aldrich Athletic Center as a part of Homecoming 2013 festivities. The alumni team featured some of the all time leaders in all categories from past teams, but the current Lady Tigers played solid enough to come out with a commanding 70-48 victory.
All eleven Tigers that dressed for the game managed to score as the playing time was balanced relatively even between the players. Freshman point guard Molly Holtrop (Cedar Springs) paced the balanced Tiger attack with 15 points and 6 assists. Abby Schultz (Holland Calvary) was also in double figures with 10 points. Brittany Summerfield (Forest Hills Northern) and Anna Iwaniw (Kent City) each scored eight points while Jenna Jamieson (Wayland/Spring Arbor) and Amy Leszinske (Ravenna) each scored seven.
To no one’s surprise, Jessica Sikorski, GBC’s all-time leading scorer, led the alumni team with 15 points. Carrie Kalambula added nine points, Meagan Beckwith had seven, and new Hall of Fame inductee Jodie Kline chipped in with six points.
“We were ecstatic that so many of our former players were able to play this year,” a very upbeat Coach Renzema said after the game. “That was a very talented group and they really made us work out there. It was great for some of our younger players to get some experience and get some of the butterflies out of their system.”
“We did a lot of nice things, but we definitely have a long ways to go before we are ready for a real game. There is a lot to like about this year’s group of players, but we still have to become a team and gain the necessary experience. We still have a few more weeks of practice to work some of those things out”
The Lady Tigers will be in action on November 2 at 8PM in an exhibition game against Davenport University at Kent City High School.
