The Lady Tigers played their first home game of the 2012-13 season on Saturday, but it was no easy match-up. The Redhawks of Indiana University Northwest were a last minute replacement for Mount Mary College. The Redhawks came in with a 4-4 record, but two of the losses were close losses to ranked NAIA teams and another loss was to a NCAA Division 1 team where they were only behind by 3 at the half.
The Lady Tigers hung tough and battled early and had a 14-13 lead mid way through the first half, however they had a few minutes where they got away from their offense and didn’t execute well against the multiple defenses played by IUN. The first half ended with the Redhawks leading 35-26.
Consistency on offense was also an issue in the second half and IUN was able to score some easy inside baskets, primarily by center Val Zulevic, who led all scorers with 28 points. The Tigers kept things competitive until late in the game and the final ended at 68-46.
Kim Kamp (Tri-Unity Christian) and Anna Iwaniw (Kent City) led the scoring with 12 points each. Sydney Wildeboer (Kent City) was also in double figures with 10. Abby Schultz (Calvary Schools of Holland) added five points and four assists. Kerie Rudd (Battle Creek Pennfield) led a balanced rebounding attack with six.
“We did a lot of good things on the court today, but we were a little over-matched today,” Coach Renzema commented after the game. “Our record may not show it yet, but we are making progress and improving.”
The Lady Tigers will next be in action at home against Moody Bible Institute on Friday, November 30 at 6 PM as a part of the NCCAA Midwest Regional Tip-Off hosted at the Aldrich Athletic Center.
