The Lady Tigers continued their run of solid play by defeating the Barclay Bears 53-39 in Dubuque, Iowa. The victory makes it five in the last six games for the Lady Tiger squad. Once again the Tigers came out with stifling first half defense, only allowing the Bears 13 points in the opening frame. The Tigers allowed only 24 total points in the first halves of the two games during the weekend.
As has become customary, the scoring was very balanced. Marissa Pelletier (Calvin Christian) led the team with 12 points, Amy Leszinske (Ravenna) had 11, Abby Schultz (Calvary Schools of Holland) and Brittany Summerfield (Forest Hills Northern) each contributed nine points. Kerie Rudd (Battle Creek Pennfield) played a solid game with four points, nine assists, and four rebounds. Amy Leszinske was the leading rebounder with seven.
The team shooting percentages continue to climb after a rough start to the season. They shot a solid 45% against the Bears, including 51% from inside the arc.
“We knew that Barclay liked to drive the ball and kick out and the girls did a great job of defending that in the first half”, Coach Renzema said about his team after the victory. “We set the tone defensively in the first halves of both games this weekend and that was the key to our wins.”
“I am also very pleased with the balance of our scoring. We don’t really have one star on offense and we have been getting solid contributions from everyone.”
The Lady Tigers return home for six games in the next two weeks starting with a game against Great Lakes Christian on Tuesday, January 15 at 5 PM.
