Coach Rich Renzema was inducted into the Grace Bible College Hall of Fame in a ceremony held during the intermission between the women’s and men’s alumni basketball games on October 13.
Coach Renzema is starting his tenth season as women’s coach at Grace and his 44th year of coaching overall. He started his coaching career in 1969 at Caledonia where he started out coaching junior high basketball. He eventually coached JV for five years and varsity for three years, including one district championship. Coach Renzema also coached men’s track for nine years at Caledonia, winning five conference championships, and is credited for starting the cross country program at Caledonia.
In 1978, Coach Renzema moved over to Wyoming Park where he coached boys varsity basketball for six years, women’s varsity basketball for one year, and women’s golf for six years.
In 1984, Coach Renzema made the decision to move to Coopersville, where he really made a name for himself and put Coopersville athletics on the map. He coached boys varsity basketball for 19 years, women’s varsity basketball for three years, and track for 19 years. In basketball, his teams won five conference championships, seven district championships, three regional championships, and made it to the state finals one time where his team narrowly lost.
His Coopersville track teams were dominant, winning six conference championships, 6 regional championships, three state runner-ups, and one team state championship. His teams went undefeated in conference competition for seven consecutive seasons.
Coach Renzema has won numerous coaching awards through the years including the Class B High School Coach of the Year, NCCAA Midwest Regional Coach of the Year, ACCA National Coach of the Year, and NCCAA National Coach of the Year. He has over 500 career basketball coaching victories and over 1000 victories combined on all sports.
“I am very grateful for this honor of going into the Grace Bible College Hall of Fame,” Coach Renzema said during his induction ceremony. “When I first came to Grace I thought this was something I would do for a couple of years and then see what happens. I have been really blessed to work with and coach a lot of great people and here we are 10 years later.”
