Holland, MI – In the consolation game of the DeVette/Sentinel Tournament at Hope College, the Tigers lost in the final minutes again 65-62. “We are good enough to play with anyone right,” said Head Coach Gary Bailey. “But, until we learn how to close out a game, we will continue to see some losses.” The Tigers were back and forth with Covenant College (NCAA III) for the entire game. The Tigers took the lead late 59-54 with just over three minutes to play. The next six possessions for the Tigers saw them commit four turnovers and miss the front end of a one and one. “After the game I told the players that we are at the halfway point of the season and we cannot use the fact that we are so young as an excuse any longer. It is time to get to work and learn how to close out these games. We have now lost six games by just 2-6 points. In all those games we were up late and did not make free throws or take care of the ball,” said Bailey.
The Tigers held an advantage in rebounds, 32-31 and shooting percentage 47% to 43%.
Freshman BJ VanLoo led the Tigers with 12 points and 6 rebounds. For his efforts he was selected to the All Tournament Team. Zach Schutte scored 11, and Nick Mascorro and Greg Salmon each had 10. Jake Blaukamp pulled down 6 rebounds and handed out a team high 4 assists.
The Tigers will play at home on Wednesday night against Aquinas College at 7:00pm. The game will be carried by WBBL and Brett Bakita. There will be a special presentation before the game and halftime entertainment.
