After two tough losses in close games this season, one at the buzzer, the Tigers were able to get a win at the buzzer. NCAA III, Calvin College, and Grace battled for 40 minutes with both teams controlling the game and score at times. Grace shot a season low 37.7% and committed 16 turnovers but controlled the ball and hit the shot when it was needed. With the Knights up one and 16 seconds on the clock, the Tigers called timeout to set up the play. “I was really happy the way the guys executed the play we set up in the huddle,” said Coach gary Bailey. “We knew that they would be focusing on Allen (Durham) and we tried to set a screen and get him the ball in the high post. We put Krombeen on the low post on the right side because he is left handed. Allen made a nice post entry pass and Ryan was able to hit the shot. i was still concerned because Calvin pushed the ball up the court passed our defenders with time still on the clock.” Calvin would not get the shot off and Grace came away with the victory.
Allen Durham led Grace with 19 points and 11 boards. Matt Kurtz continued his strong play off the bench with 12 points. ” I was so happy with our bench play again tonight,” said Bailey. “Ou bench outscored Calvin 21-6. John Oostema hit three big threes for us and Aaron Schutte played a great defensive game and rebounded well.” Cory Jamieson and Ryan Krombeen each had 4 assists.
The Tigers were 6 for 7 from the line while Calvin made 15 of 23. The Tigers led at the half 34-28
Grace will take on Heidleberg College in the Championship game tomorrow at 3:00pm.
