First Half Hole Dooms Tigers

The Tigers dug a hole in the first half of today’s game and could not quite get out as they lost to the NAIA’s top twenty five team, Cornerstone University 84-75.  In the first half, Grace held a 17-11 lead but gave up a 21-3 run to CU.  CU led by as many as 24 in the first half before Grace could cut it to 19 at the break.  “We absolutely were terrible on defense during that stretch and left their shooters wide open.  To their credit they were able to knock down the shots,” said Coach Gary Bailey.  “We struggle to shoot 63% from the line and they shot that from the three tonight.”  Cornerstone was 10-16 from the arc.

The second half proved to be the Tiger’s half as they opened the half on a 12-0 run.  After a CU timeout and a basket, GBC cut into the lead again, taking it all the way to two points but the Tigers could get no closer.  “I was extremely proud of the guys in the second half.  We didn’t give up and that is the sign of a championship team.  As much as this loss hurts today, I think we will be better off for it as our season winds down and tournament time starts up,” said Bailey.

Ryan Dame led Grace with 18 points.  Allen Durham scored 16 and grabbed a game high 18 rebounds.  Senior Paul Nelson added 14 points and Dame 11 points and 5 assists for Grace.  Brandon Herlein had 9 points on 3-6 shooting from three.

For the first time this season Grace will have a much deserved week from games for a little rest and some quality practice time.  Grace will play again on January 12th in Gary, IN at The University of Indiana Northwest.
