The 9th Annual Blue / Gold game was a huge success on Thursday night as the Men’s JV and Varsity teams combined to play an intrasquad scrimmage in front of a great crowd in the Aldrich Athletic Center. The 9th annual event is geared to allow fans a look at the men’s basketball team as they split up and play the scrimmage.
“This night is always a lot of fun,” said Coach Gary Bailey. “It is almost entirely for the fans to see and meet the teams. It is our own version of a Midnight Madness. The fans enjoy seeing the new players and returners while the coaches get to see some of the fruits of our labor from recruiting.”
The night started with the lay-up lines as the players were allowed to dunk. They put on quite a show of various high flying dunks and some pretty deep three point shooting. During a few time-outs, Coach Bailey helped lead some fans in shooting games. At the half, Coach Bailey played game show host and played “Name That TV Theme Song” for some contestants.
In the game, the Gold Team, coached by Bill Jamieson and assisted by his oldest son, and former Grace player Matt, beat the Blue Team 86-74. Jamieson, a longtime friend of Grace, was selected to coach this years Gold Team. “Bill has put four kids through Grace Bible College and is our Assistant AD’s Father, said Coach Bailey. “It was nice for Bill to get a win tonight because he is so competitive. Bill and his wife Cindy are so awesome and they and their children have had a big impact on Grace.” Bill has been with International Paper Company for over 20 years.
The Blue Team was coached by one of West Michigan’s most loved radio and TV sports personalities, Bret Bakita. Bakita is with Clear Channel Communications. “I have had the pleasure of getting to know Bret a little better over the last couple of year’s,” said Coach Bailey. “He truly cares about the kids and sports in West Michigan and it shows in how he goes about his business. We were so happy to have Bret and his family join us tonight for the game. They made it a real family affair. I know GBC and the Bakita Family both gained some fans tonight.”
Paul TenHarmsel led the Blue Team with 23 points. Eight other players found the scoring column for the Blue. The Gold Team was led by Caleb Cook’s 20 points and Nick Mascorro’s and Travis Rader’s 17 each. Ten players reached the scoring column for the Gold Team.
