Caught up for quick chat with new JV coach David Oldebekking about the upcoming season.
What is your role with the Men’s Basketball Program?
My main role with the program is to coach the JV team. As far as what that entails, it is really all about development. With the JV program we are trying to develop basketball players. It is my job to make sure that these players are ready to compete at the highest level possible. Some of these kids could be called up at any time, and I need to make sure that they are ready for that. I will also be around a lot to help the varsity team in any way I can. Once the season gets rolling, a lot of time will be spent on the recruiting trail to make sure we are prepared for next season.
Outside of basketball, many of the kids on the JV team are freshmen and will be on their own for the first time. I hope to be a guide to help them through the trials and tribulations that they will face as they begin a new chapter in their life.
What are your expectations for the coming year?
I have never been one to count or worry about wins or losses. Wins and losses come and go, that is basketball. However, I do have expectations for the year. I expect our guys to always represent Grace in a great light. I expect our team to always compete and try their best at all times. I expect the guys on the team to be role models and leaders on campus and in the community.
What else do you want to tell Grace Nation?
I am just so excited to get going. We have spent most of the summer in open gyms, but I am ready for practice to start. Being in the gym everyday, working with the guys and getting to know them even better is something I am looking forward too.
Also, I have been so welcomed by everyone at Grace and it has been great, but I know I haven’t met everyone. If you are in the gym or see me walking around campus, please stop and introduce yourself.
First game is at home on November 3rd, hope to see you there.
